Nick Roder is a composer, arranger and performer with a passion for beautiful and moving music that can be heard throughout all of his work. Nick works on a range of projects including creating solo work, music for screen & video games, music for dance and arranging & orchestration.

Throughout 2023 Nick has worked closely alongside Oliver Coates as a composer’s assistant. Nick has assisted Oliver on several projects for screen, including upcoming feature films Foe and Close to You and TV series Mary & George. Nick also assisted Oliver in the creation of the music for the 2023 Dior Fall show in Mumbai.

Nick has worked alongside contemporary dancer/director Harrison Ritchie-Jones on several projects that explore an intersection between movement, music and film. These include short-film Banshee Cried Silver and live-show CUDDLE, both of which premiered at the 2023 FRAME Biennial in Melbourne, and Big Wig Small Gig presented as a part of Stephanie Lake’s ESCALATOR series.

Nick has worked alongside singer-songwriters Gena Rose Bruce, Ryan Downey, Darvid Thor and Jesse Glass to create string & wind arrangements for their upcoming work, releasing throughout 2023.

In 2020 Nick conceptualised Indigo, a project that focuses on the deep sonic and musical exploration of little-heard ensembles. The first album Part I was released by Melbourne label Music Company and features nine pieces for bass guitar and tenor saxophone.

Nick has composed music for several video games including This Dead Winter, N1NE: The Splintered Mind, The Invisible Hand and Roadwarden, which was featured in ‘2022 game of the year’ lists published by The New Yorker, The Guardian, The Telegraph UK and PC Gamer.

Cutting his teeth early on as a composer, arranger and performer with art-rock ensemble Tulalah, he was able to explore a range of sonic textures, combining contemporary jazz/rock and chamber ensemble sounds. Tulalah released The Flood in 2015 (Equinox Recordings) and The Question in 2017. Tulalah continues to perform on occasion, most recently selling out two shows at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
